University of Massachusetts died Saturday in The Cooley Dick inson Hospital in Northampton In 1922 he began a career of 41 years at the university first as a professor in olericulture He later became head of the horticultural department He was the founder of the Na tional Junior Horticulture Associa tion serving as its chairman for 35 years and also as emeritus chairman in recent years He also had been president of the aculty Club He belonged to the Boston Mar ket Growers Association and the American Association of Horticul ture Science He was the first recipient of the Kelsey Award from the Veget able Growers Association of America and was an honorary state farmer from the Massachu setts uture armers of Ameri ca Born in Kitchener Ontario Can ada he attended local schools Bernard Battles WWB vet WESTIELD Bernard Battles 62 of 241 Buck Pond Road an engineer for many years died Sunday in Baystate Medical Center He had worked 14 years for the Western Massachusetts Electric Co 11 years at the Monsanto Chemical Co and most recently 17 years for the United States De partment of Labor with the Occu pational Safety and Health Admin istration He was a member of the Inter national Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the the National As sociation of Professional Engi neers Born in Springfield he attended city schools there and was a grad uate of Cathedral High School there He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II and had been a member of the Dante Club in West Springfield and the John Boyle Club in Springfield He later moved to Westfield He leaves his wife the former Pamela itzgerald five sons Ber nard Ill of Port Owen NY Gregory and Gary both of the eeding Hills section of Agawam Brian of Chester and Philip of Springfield three daughters Kelly Battles at home Rosemarie Pinette of Ware and Lisa Battles of Springfield two sisters Regina Griffin and Isabel A Heffernan both of Springfield eight grandchildren and his first wife the former Georgette LaChapplle The funeral will be Wednesday morning at TP Sampson Co Lib erty Street Parlors and in Our Lady of Hope Church with burial at the convenience of the family Calling hours are this evening and Tuesday
