In the mid credits scene, Crazy Dave shows his three new plants: Sweet Pea, Chilly Pepper and Shamrock, to the other plants and they welcome them to the Plant Herd. Five years later, in the post credits scene, Crazy Dave was watching an episode of The Walking Dead that was broadcasting on Fox Channel while eating his taco meal and drinking Diet co*ke at home and was enjoying it until it was interrupted by an urgent news about a zombie apocalypse in Suburbia caused by Dr. Zomboss, and Crazy Dave was very surprised about that. Then is cell phone rang and he picked up the call, and Burt told him through the cell phone that there's a zombie attack out there in the city of Suburbia. On November 1, 2019, four months and four days after the premiere of Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time, DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg officially confirmed that there was going to be a third Plants vs. Zombies film scheduled for a spring 2022 release, bringing the film series to be a trilogy. Five months later, on April 2020, the production was shut down because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Later, on January 5, 2022, Katzenberg confirmed that the production was officially restored and the filmmakers started producing the film, and the film's title was Plants vs. Zombies 3. On March 9, 2022, Katzenberg confirmed that Mike Mitchell will be the director of the film, Chris Meledandri will be the producer of the film with Rebecca Huntley being the co-producer, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller will be the screenplayers, Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger will be the writers for the story and Nick Fletcher will be the editor. The next month, Katzenberg confirmed that the film is scheduled for a spring 2024 release. On June 2022, the writers had been started writing the full transcript for the film and brainstorming ideas for it. Three months later, on September 2022, DreamWorks Animation announced that Tom Holland, Bella Thorne, and Ghostbusters co-star Bill Murray had joined the cast of the film, while Dan Aykroyd and Steve Buscemi revealed the story, which follows Crazy Dave teaming up with his nephews Nate Timely and Patrice Blazing, his best friend and the other neighbors he knows to survive a zombie apocalypse in Alaska and they must stop Dr. Zomboss with the help of the plants before he rules Earth and make people become zombies permanently, while Peashooter and the agents are planning an all-out war as Peashooter chooses to join the Gatling Peas. On January 26, 2023, it was confirmed that Bryce Dallas Howard, Jack McBrayer, Angela Bassett, Christopher Lloyd, Danny McBride and Hugh Laurie had joined the cast. A day after this announcement, DreamWorks Animation changed the title's film to Plants vs. Zombies: The Boss Hunt.
On March 15, 2023, Michael Giacchino was confirmed to compose the score for Plants vs. Zombies: The Boss Hunt, replacing Hans Zimmer from the first two films. On May 5, 2023, it was confirmed that Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was originally cast as the voice of Chard Guard in Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time, finally had joined the cast to replace the now retired Bruce Willis as the brawling chard plant from the second film, now having the voice acting duties for 2 characters; a day later, Schwarzenegger confirmed that he had taken Bruce Willis' place because he had revealed on April of last year that Willis had been retired from acting due to health problems. On July 18, 2023, it was confirmed that Anna Kendrick, Damon Wayans Jr., Nick Frost, Don Cheadle, Hugo Weaving, Chris Hemsworth, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Glenn Close had joined the cast, and some of the cast from the first and second film are possibly going to reprise their respective roles, with Neil Patrick Harris voicing a new type of Peashooter plant: the Beeshooter.
