Have you ever seen a strange purple smoking-looking item and picked it up, only to die from immediate death syndrome seconds later? Did you happen to wonder what happened? If that’s the case, this guide is for you. I’ll go over the fundamentals of curse in this death simulator.

Curse Summary

The curse is a hidden stat that can affect various gameplay elements when entering the dungeon. Cursed items emit purple/black smoke particles. There are cursed weapons and items that always look the same. The curse increases in one-point increments, but some items can have multiple curses.

Curse Effects

  • The curse’s primary function is to buff your enemies. Enemies who have been cursed will appear in the form of jams. They turn red and black and deal the same amount of damage as a full heart container. They have three times their normal health and can move and shoot 50% faster. At one curse, there is a 1% chance that a random enemy in each room will be jammed. As an aside, jammed enemies will take contact damage even if their normal version does not.
  • Jammed enemies drop a lot more shells, so weigh the risk/reward before picking up a cursed item.
  • If a Keybullet or Chance is jammed, it will drop twice the usual reward when killed. Bosses who are overworked do show up.
  • Despite the fact that their attack patterns remain unchanged, their attacks deal twice as much damage.
  • In addition, their total health is multiplied by 1.2. For instance, 1.2 x 100 = 120.
  • With each point of the curse, the drop rate of ammo upon a room clear increases by 1.05 percent.
  • For each point of the curse, the chance of a chest spawning as mimic increases by 2.1 percent. When you obtain 47 curse, this percentage increases to 100%. This is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to accomplish in a single run, but it is still something to consider.
  • For each point of the curse, the chance of a chest having a fuse increases by 5%.
  • If the player has at least one curse point, they can enter the black market without having to carry 100 shells.
  • The lord of the jammed spawns if the player obtains 10 points of curse in a single run. It is immune to all forms of damage and will pursue the player until he or she dies.

Removing Curse

You can get rid of the curse by doing the following:

  • Dropping any cursed item/gun.

Curses can be lifted by praying at the following shrines:

  • Cleanse shrine (sets curse to 0 if curse is lesser than 10)
  • Dice shrine granting Cleansed (removes up to 10 curse)

Trivia

Things I couldn’t fit anywhere else:

  • Stealing from Cursula only increases the curse by one.
  • The curse extends to the past (sucks to suck if you encounter a jammed boss there).
  • There are a few rooms where jammed enemies can spawn naturally. This can occur on the following floors: Abbey of the True Gun, Resourceful Rat’s Lair, Forge, and Bullet Hell.
  • Jammomancers and Jamerlengo are both capable of jamming a single enemy or the entire room.
